I am not a football fan. I'm not a sports fan in general, but I despise football since I think it's too violent.

I'm a football fan, I love it and I play it daily. I'm talking about English football, known as Soccer in the states.

I love all the variants of 'football'.

I played semi-pro gridiron for 10 years (1984-94), Rugby (League & Union) & I only retired from competitive soccer 3 years ago (I was a goalkeeper). I WISH I could have got to play 'footy' (Australian Rules Football, it's RAD, man!)

Fave teams -

Gridiron - Oakland Raiders
Soccer - Carlisle United & AZ (Alkmaar, Holland, my local team here)
Footy - Essendon Bombers

I probably watch upwards of seven games a week these days, thanx to internet streaming - whilst doing forum stuff, I have 2 huge multi-functional monitors!

...as the OP is from 'old blighty' I assumed they meant "Association Football", I was just having fun with the fact that 'football' means different things in different places.

...and every single one of the variants has worthy things about them, if you give them the chance.

For example, Gridiron gave me access to the best chat-up routine of my life..

I could be stood on the edge of the dance-floor, looking long & hard (especially hard!) at the best-stacked chick in the room. When she returned to her boyfriend, I'd go up to her and say "Hey, you're an incredible woman. You're beautiful, you have a fantastic figure and you move so well" (By this time, you can see the steam coming from the boyfriends' ears!) "How would you like to try out for our Cheerleader Squad?"

MAN I got laid far more often than I deserved to through that!

So, don't knock what ya don't know, just cos it ain't "PROPER" football.

They should use their own name - not try and steal it (insert offensive comment here) !

Dude, learn your history - football is Association Football, it has no claim of exclusivity on the "F" word.

I LOVE it but I'm not ignorant of it's roots, nor of the inherent value of 'other codes' of the game.
